Going to the beach is one of the main activities that San Luis Obispo High School students look forward to taking part in over summer. Warm weather, icy drinks, and splashing around in the ocean are just a few things that make the beach so enjoyable. However, the beach is not for everyone. What do less outdoorsy students, or students who simply prefer a colder climate, do during their two-and-a-half month break from school? Here are a few suggestions for those less-beachy SLOHS students:
Go hiking and biking: Most residents of San Luis Obispo will tell you about the numerous trails and mountains that offer a perfect way to exercise, while taking advantage of SLO’s beautiful features. Some popular spots in SLO County include Bishop’s Peak, Madonna Mountain, and Valencia Peak in Montana De Oro. These hikes will reward you with a breathtaking view, each one different from the last. When asked what she thinks the best part about hiking and biking is freshman Emma Manderino said,”being in nature and seeing beautiful views while getting good quality exercise.”
Enjoy some live music: Every Friday starting from June 10 to September 9, live music is performed at the Mission Plaza in downtown SLO. The music ranges from rock, folk, blues, reggae, and even pop. Another popular musical experience amongst citizens of SLO is Live Oak Music Festival from June 17 to 19. Live Oak is a perfect way to relax with some friends, while listening to some quality tunes. When asked what his favorite part about Live Oak is, senior Matt White said,“the communal attitude and how everyone is just there to enjoy themselves and have a good time.”
Take a road-trip: Many places located near SLO are easy to drive to, but still allow you to feel as if you’re on vacation. Big Sur offers a wide variety of trails, waterfalls, creeks, and amazing views. Santa Barbara, less than two hours away, has some of the best shopping in California, along with constant warm and sunny weather. Part of the road-tripping experience is discovering your own secret spots and going on adventures with friends or family.
“I like going to national parks like Yosemite because it’s fun to look outside the window and see everything,” said senior Kyra Lauritzen.
Make sure your lack of interest in the beach doesn’t force you to sit inside all summer. Remember these are only a few activities that are perfect alternatives; summer is meant for trying new things!
