Going north or south of San Luis Obispo High School any person heading towards the beach will encounter some amazing beaches. Here are four beaches in San Luis Obispo County that are great places for learning to surf.
Palisades:
Location: Palisades Park, Shell Beach Best Swell: Palisades typically picks up less swell than surrounding areas, but also less wind. Wait for a good swell bigger than five foot and enjoy.
Beginner friendliness: The crowd and vibe is typically extremely friendly towards beginners. This is a good spot for beginners to frequent, especially during the summer.
Hazards: Avoid the scattering rocks underneath the surface of the water by falling flat in water.
Morro Rock:
Location: end of Coleman Dr., Morro Bay
Best Swell: Look for long period south-west swells to provide clean waves with enough time in between sets to relax.
Beginner friendliness: When small Morro Rock usually has a fun and mellow vibe perfect for beginners. On the weekends it is recommended to walk down the beach a bit in order to avoid crowds. Freshman Galen Penvenne said, “Always check conditions before surfing anywhere. Make sure not to get out over your head. The Rock can pick up some big swells in the winter”.
Hazards: Not many hazards, except for collisions on crowded days.
Wadsworth Avenue:
Location; end of Wadsworth Ave, Pismo Pier
Best Swell: Picks up swell from all directions. Count on waves slightly smaller than found in Morro Bay, and be prepared to deal with wind. Pismo resident, and sophomore, Kian Sleman, said “Look towards the early morning for the best conditions. If you are committed there are streetlights that shine off the pier for before sunrise sessions”.
Beginner friendliness: Possibly the most beginner hospitable spot out of all the ones mentioned. Plenty of open space to find a empty peak.
Hazards: No hazards here. Just avoid getting altercations with any other surfers.
Oceano State Beach:
Location: Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area
Best Swell: Oceano can pick up swell from everywhere. It typically breaks slightly bigger than Pismo Pier, and is definitely less crowded. With excellent lifeguards and consistent surf, Oceano can be a great spot to frequent.
Beginner friendliness: Lots of open space perfect for beginners.
Hazards: Watch out for the occasional rip current. Be wary if swimming is not a forte.
