It’s no secret that San Luis Obispo High School has a population of students that chose to wear makeup; some of them are pretty good at it too. The true question is, where are they getting this makeup?
There are a wide variety of cosmetic companies that offer more affordable prices and are considered “drugstore” makeup due to being traditionally sold in stores like CVS and RiteAid. However, there are some companies that take a more luxurious approach. With prices over two times higher than drugstore makeup, high-end makeup is generally praised for its quality. But is that really true?
“[High-end brands] use a lot of clean ingredients so it’s better for your skin. You’re definitely getting what you pay for,” said freshman Loretta Tapia Maza.
Some notable companies that are considered drugstore are Elf, NYX Professional Makeup, and Essence. On the expensive side, Charlotte Tilbury, Benefit, and Clinique are definitely considered a luxury.
Perhaps it’s not all or nothing. Many makeup wearers apply a mix of the two, stating that some kinds of makeup are worth splurging on.
“A lot of Tarte products are worth it. I really like their mascara and concealer. Also a lot of Charlotte Tilbury [products] like their Flawless Filter foundation and their lip liner is really good,” said freshman Pari Singh.
Many popular luxury makeup brands have a number of viral products. Of course when something becomes popular other brands would try to replicate it. In the cosmetic industry “dupes” are a very big thing. With the duplicate sometimes rising higher in popularity, it’s clear that there may not be a secret code to making good makeup.
“Elf has done a really good job with their Power Grip Primer. It’s similar to the one from Milk but better since the Milk one [broke me out],” said freshman Kali Lynch
In the end no one should be judging others for what kind of makeup they wear. It’s up to everyone if they wish to save their money and go the drugstore route, or spend more for costly beauty products.
