Students at San Luis Obispo High School love to show off their music taste on social media. Whether it’s a new playlist or a song they discovered, they want to share it with the world.
Platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music, the two most popular music streaming platforms today, make this easy.
With the ability to follow friends, make collaborative playlists, and see friend activity, music streaming platforms have become more like social platforms.
“We kind of look at music as something very natural in people’s lives. I mean, most of us can relate to music in some sort of shape and form, and if you think about it, most of us remember the first time we kissed someone, what kind of music was playing or the song that was playing on our friend’s birthday,” said Spotify CEO Daniel Ek.
This natural place that music has in almost everyone’s lives makes it seem only right that it should be shared with friends and family.
Music taste can say a lot about a person. From country to rap to indie rock to pop, a person’s personality is buried in there somewhere.
Even looking at a person’s recent playlists can tell students a little bit about what’s going on in their life.
Some people really enjoy these aspects of music streaming platforms.
“I will regularly go and just stalk people’s playlists for hours on end just for pure entertainment. It’s so sick being able to see what my friends are listening to on a daily basis and as well I’m able to discover a ton of new songs and artists through them,” said Schisler.
These social features provide a fun way to give others insight into how you’re feeling or what you’re up to.
Music is a universal language that can connect almost everyone together, and it has throughout history.
