It is the end of September, and being stuck at home has San Luis Obispo High School students hungry for a new show to sink their teeth into.
Expressions created a list of show reviews to help students find something new to watch in quarantine.
“The Boys” (Season 2): Back again with even more insane clashes, storylines, and characters, “The Boys” has, without question, remained a powerhouse when it comes to entertainment. Following an oddball band of disgruntled citizens, who are intent on making corrupt superheroes owned by the multi million dollar company, Vought, pay for their heinous actions; “The Boys” is not something to miss. Jam packed with action, and beyond twisted scenes even more spine chilling than the first season, “The Boys” has continued to allow audiences to gaze into an intense reality where “supes” and humanity exist.
“Lovecraft Country”: Adapted from the horrific tales of H.P. Lovecraft, and directed and produced by renowned director and comedian Jordan Peele, Lovecraft Country is an amazing tale of horror and mysticism through the lens of racial oppression during the era of Jim Crow laws. Full of suspense and in your face scares, “Lovecraft Country” is perfect for someone looking for those early fall thrills. “My wife, Pacific Beach High School English Teacher Stacey Nairne, and I watch the show every Sunday night on HBO. I love how unique the plot twists are, and I appreciate the historical connection to the institutionalized racism that is an unfortunate part of our Country’s history. My wife simply loves the gore!” said English teacher, Scott Nairne.
“Mulan”: With all the hype and politics that followed the release of Mulan, the movie definitely gained love and hate at the same time. The first issue that many saw with the film was that the classic songs like “Be A Man” were completely cut leaving many audiences unfulfilled and disappointed. Another issue was the crazy price; many thought that the $29.00 dollar ask was too high for what was considered to be a low quality film. The movie followed the original story of Mulan, but many viewers were extremely upset to see that characters like Mushu and Cri-kee weren’t present in the film. Disney also suffered an extreme loss when many decided to boycott the film based on some of the actors’ views towards the Hong Kong protests. Overall the film certainly wasn’t a box office hit, but this is considered fairly normal for Disney’s live action adaptations.
“Raised By Wolves”: Return to Ridley Scott’s world of Sci-Fi, “Raised by Wolves” is a perfect show for those looking for the same gritty world from the “Alien” movies. Although it is on HBO Max, which can cost a pretty penny the show is definitely worth it. Following the last few survivors of the human race onn an alien world, who have to defy the unknown along with their own beliefs. “Raised by Wolves” offers a stark look into a world ravaged by religious conflict and political views, told through the experiences of otherworldly futuristic characters.
