San Luis Obispo High School students have been waiting all year for the new swimming pool to be installed on campus. After many setbacks and problems, the pool has finally been plastered and filled with water, and it looks beautiful.
“I’m super excited about the new pool! It looks amazing and I can’t wait to have home meets and practices!” said sophomore Naya Koc.
Once students are able to go back to school, there will be no more practices or home games in other locations, and SLOHS swimmers, divers, and water polo players will have their own pool.
“”I’m really excited that our school finally has a pool of our own. I know it’s smaller than the space we’re used to at Sinshiemer, but I’m really glad that we get to have a place for swimmers, divers, and water polo players to represent their sport on campus,” said sophomore Hannah Stephens.
Not in an aquatic sport? No worries.
“The pool will be available to students in PE classes with aquatic teaching units as well as student athletes on campus,” said principal Leslie O’Connor.
Since Measure D began, students have been excited for the new pool, however, the process was not the fastest, due to many obstacles.
“Most difficult thing about finishing the pool was getting it started. We had several issues to overcome that needed work prior to actually digging the hole and even then that was a problem due to excessive rain and moisture,” said O’Connor.
But with much patience and hard work, it was finally finished. This changes so much for SLOHS aquatic sports teams and PE classes.
“This changes my swim experience because little things that we were used to such as carpooling to the pool with teammates during fifth period won’t be necessary anymore. Since we have much easier access, we won’t need to drive each other to a different place, which gets rid of a little bit of that bonding time. But now we also have the chance to host meets at our own campus and save time after school so practice can start earlier and finish sooner,” said Stephens.

I hope there might be consideration given to naming the facility The Ernstrom Aquatic Center to honor longtime SLO Swim Coach Rick Ernstrom. My sons both swam and prospered under his direction. Thank you for your consideration.
