San Luis Obispo’s High Street Deli is closed in the midst of the county’s shelter-at-home order, postponing fulfillment of students’ sando cravings for at least 2-3 weeks.
The unique menu and quirky aesthetics of High Street Deli define it as a staple of SLO. Before the high school’s transition to online school due to COVID-19, High Street sandwiched its way into countless San Luis Obispo High School students’ hearts.
“The High Street Deli Mother Nature Veg is the best sandwich in SLO. It contains the perfect amount of veggies,” said senior Lauren Lafaille, interviewed by Expressions prior to school closure.
Unfortunately, the Mother Nature Veg and all other sandos are currently unavailable. However, High Street’s online store is still up and running, with sweatshirts, sticker packs, hats, and shirts all available for purchase.
Other restaurants remaining open for take-out are classified as “Businesses open for limited service” by SLO County, meaning they can only process pick-up, drive through, or delivery orders but cannot seat customers inside or outside the restaurant. High Street, however, decided to close its doors.
“We have decided to close High St. Market and Deli until further notice. This was such a hard decision to make but keeping our staff and our staff’s family at home safe is priority. We’ll be working on an online ordering system, cleaning and beautifying our 1927 gem, and working on a new coronavirus combatting system for getting sandwiches out fast,” said High Street Deli on their Instagram page last Saturday.
Although SLOHS students may not taste a delicious High Street sandwich for a few weeks, they can still support their favorite deli through purchases of swag on highstdeli.com.
