San Luis Obispo High School senior Rachel O’Brien is a woman of many interests. But by far, she is most passionate about her two pygmy goats. Expressions reached out to O’Brien to learn more about her, and her unique pets.
Expressions: Why did you originally want goats?
Senior Rachel O’Brien: I wanted goats because we have a lot of property where I live. I’ve always liked animals and my sister had always wanted goats so I wanted them too. It was after my dog died when I thought about getting goats.
Expressions: Are goats better pets than dogs?
O’Brien: I’d say they are. It depends what you’re looking for. Goats have their own personalities and they’re pretty easy to take care of. There are all different types of goats. Mine are pygmy goats so they’re a lot smaller. There’s also goats you can milk or goats for breeding.
Expressions: Should more people consider getting goats?
O’Brien: Definitely, goats are great animals!
Expressions: Should people who don’t live on a lot of property still consider getting goats as pets?
O’Brien: Probably not, because they like some space to run around and play with each other. Another thing is that goats always want another friend to be with, so if you’re going to get some you want to get at least two so they can play with each other. I definitely recommend getting goats if you have the property for them.
Expressions: Where did you get your goats?
O’Brien: I looked on Craigslist and found a goat breeder who lived about three hours away, I can’t remember where, we drove there and they were just little tiny babies. They were so small and precious.
