Released on January 16, “American Sniper” is one of the most controversial films currently being discussed. In the short amount of time the film has been out, it has earned $213 million in the box office.
Directed by Clint Eastwood, the film follows the story of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper). Kyle is listed as the deadliest sniper in American history with over 160 confirmed kills in his four-tour career. In a gritty, gruesomely realistic style, the producers tried to stay as accurate to “The Legend’s” story as possible, and screenwriter Jason Dean Hall even used Kyle’s autobiography to keep the film authentic.
Due to the film’s controversy, a social media war has begun as risqué tweets from stars such as Seth Rogan and Michael Moore shame the film and Kyle’s role as a SEAL. Despite the tensions being high, the film has still had massive success and is still rising in the box office ranks.
This film is rated R for strong and disturbing war violence and language throughout, including some sexual references. It has also been nominated for six Oscar awards.
