Every year, by contractual agreement, the San Luis Coastal Teachers Association membership at San Luis Obispo High School votes on the instructional day schedule of the next school year. This year there were three options for the teachers to vote on.
Option one was to remain on the trimester, option two was to fall back to a traditional six period day, and the last option was a hybrid block semester instructional schedule. Several teachers voted against the trimester for varying reasons.
“I voted for for the semester because the trimester simply goes by too fast. The trimester makes my students and myself work harder because the course I teach is designed for the semester system, not a trimester system.’’ said English teacher Michael Lara.
However, with the vote tallied, the trimester will remain in place for another year. 68 members voted total, with roughly 65 percent of the SLOHS teachers voting to keep the trimester intact.
“The best part about the trimester system is that it gives students more opportunities to take classes. That’s what it boils down to.” said Industrial Technology teacher Jed Bruington.
