Although its origins can be traced back thousands of years, yoga has reached its height in popularity in recent decades. Many students at San Luis Obispo High School have begun using yoga as a form of athletic training and to simply enjoy the spiritual aspect. Expressions sat down with senior and passionate yogi Elena Kraemer to explore the appeal of this ancient practice.
Expressions: How long have you been doing yoga?
Senior Elena Kraemer: About two years.
Expressions: What about yoga specifically appeals to you?
Kraemer: I enjoy the peaceful environment and the challenging nature of perfecting a pose.
Expressions: Do you feel that yoga has improved your abilities when participating in sports and other outdoor activities?
Kraemer: It has helped my hip problems which were preventing me from continuing cross country. But overall, I feel more flexible for all activities and have strengthened areas of my body that were weaker before.
Expressions: Where is your favorite place to do yoga?
Kraemer: SparkYoga because I love practicing in a heated room where I get a more intense workout. Home practice in my backyard is also a pleasant place to flow.
Expressions: What is the best way for a beginner to get involved in yoga?
Kraemer: Take advantage of the first free classes at local studios!
