Last Tuesday February 28, San Luis Obispo High School boys varsity volleyball team had their first game against Nipomo.
Two exchange students, who are players on the team, were not able to play and no one knows when they will be able to. Why? CIF rules. Based on what associations exchange students travel with, CIF has different rules and timing in which they will be allowed to play any sport.
“I think it’s not fair that exchange students don’t get treated the same as other players and that we as foreign students have to have extra papers while through our programs we did all our medical requirements. Somebody else who is responsible didn’t do their job in time, and we weren’t able to play our first game,” said senior volleyball player Marko Saijic.
“It happened to me as well while I was playing for the SLOHS varsity soccer team. I had to wait almost a month until I was able to play, and I personally think that this rule is too strict and the process should be faster and easier in order to allow exchange students to be an effective part of their team from day one,” said senior varsity soccer player Susanna Scaloni.
CIF rules are fair for some, but some of their process take too long and should be done by the school athletic department, which in these cases, didn’t act fast enough to let our players play.
“It sucks that they can’t play, because they are two of the strongest players on our team”, said junior volleyball varsity team captain Sawyer McSorley.
