Expressions recently interviewed two seniors on the boys varsity basketball team on their experiences playing for the team and how basketball has affected their lives.
Expressions: How has basketball impacted your life?
Senior Carson O’Connor: Basketball has played a big role in my life. Aside from the physical challenges, I’ve built great relationships with players and coaches from all over the central coast. Basketball has been a key part in building my character and has made me much more selfless.
Senior Benny Rodgers: During basketball, my life is a constant cycle of running around, getting yelled at, running around harder, getting praised, repeat.
Expressions: How long have you been playing basketball?
O’Connor: 13 years.
Rodgers: I was born with a basketball in my hands.
Expressions: Do you have a favorite memory with the team?
O’Connor: Off the court, definitely building sand castles in Ventura. On the court, just competing and winning games as a team.
Rodgers: Nate Higgins trying to dunk against Bakersfield Christian.
Expressions: Do you plan on playing basketball at all in your future?
O’Connor: No, I plan to play baseball.
Rodgers: Sorry to my fans, but no.
Expressions: Do you have a favorite basketball player and if so, why them?
O’Connor: Kobe Bryant, his work ethic and devotion to the game of basketball was on another level. Basketball was his craft and he perfected it; seeing someone with so much passion towards me inspired me growing up.
Rodgers: My favorite basketball player is Trey Francke, especially when he takes off his shirt.
