This year welcomes a new group of San Luis Obispo High School sports legends which have been publicized through the now weekly Athlete of the Week posters. Compiled by Athletic Director Adam Basch, the posters are distributed on Monday to every teacher on campus to be shown around the school.
Expressions decided to take this idea a little more personally, so we reached out to three past athletes of the week to get insights into their sporting lives.
Expressions: What is your sport, position and coach’s name?
Senior Sadie Fischer: I am one of the captains for the Varsity Cheer team which is coached by Coach Lisa McDonald, Coach Sheena and Coach Rebecca.
Junior Trey Walters: I’m a junior football player, I play safety, and my coach is Coach Pat Johnston.
Senior Colbin Garrison: This year I am a senior running back for the Football team, and my coach is Pat Johnston.
Expressions: How long have you been participating in the sport and who are your biggest influences?
Fischer: My biggest influence is my senior co-captain Zyanna Ayala. She has been such a great teammate and supporter. I watched her cheer and I knew I had to join too. I have been cheering for three years.
Walters: I’ve been playing since I was a freshman. My biggest influences have been the graduates from last year and our seniors from this year. Seeing them play and having the success that they had has made me want to have that same success. Also the coaching staff has been a big influence because they treat us players very well and build our character.
Garrison: This will be my fifth year of tackle football, but I have played flag [football] before that for almost my entire life.
Expressions: Why do you think you were chosen as an athlete of the week?
Fischer: I think I was chosen for athlete of the week because I work really hard and I encourage my team that we’ll hit these performances.
Walters: Because I had been out for two or three months with a hamstring injury that kept coming back and once I returned I had to get my starting spot back at a completely different position than I had been learning how to play, and when I played I got nine tackles and stole an interception from one of the best teams that we’ll play this year.
Garrison: Our performances and stats in the game against AGHS got us chosen.
Expressions: Do you have any training/nutrition tips that you live by?
Fischer: During the summer I go to the gym to build my strength for the season.
Walters: A big training tip I live by is prioritizing rest and recovery over anything. As soon as I stopped prioritizing rest I pulled my hamstring and had to sit out for a very long time.
Garrison: While training I always like to think about how the more it hurts the better your getting.
Expressions: What are your future plans or goals with your sport?
Fischer: My future plan is to go into NFL cheer and work with animals.
Walters: My future plans for football are to hopefully play in college regardless of the division or school. While this goal may be reaching and the chances of this happening are slim, I still would like to think that with almost a season and a half left in my high school career, I could make something work.
Garrison: I want to play football next year for Cal Poly.
Look for these three on Holt Field as Varsity Football hosts Righetti tomorrow night.
