Every student at San Luis Obispo High School has had to prepare for a test at some point during their time here. Studying for a quiz or exam can be challenging, time-consuming, and sometimes even boring, making it difficult to stay motivated. However, many students have developed various tips and tricks to help make the studying process easier and more effective.
Simple actions like minimizing distractions or altering your environment can significantly affect your grades and motivation to study for future assignments.
“Intentionally dedicating doable tasks and reasonable amounts of time, and remembering that once the test is over, you’ll have time to do other things that you like,” said sophomore Lucy Beck.
A positive mindset can help you focus on essential tasks, even when more enjoyable activities are on your mind. While studying may not be your first choice, it’s important to consider what needs to be prioritized instead. Effective time management is crucial for minimizing distractions and focusing on the tasks that matter most.
“I think students should distance themselves from screen time on distractions like TikTok, and focus on important things they need help with in classes,” said freshman Jackie Tapia.
One of the biggest distractions for students is social media, particularly TikTok. It’s entertaining videos and relatable content that keep teens engaged for long periods. Once you open the app and start scrolling, it’s easy to lose track of time and keep watching for hours.
“My most effective studying strategy is to always have a plan on what I’m studying for specifically and study for a little bit, then take a break, then study more, then take another break,” said freshman Emmie Grant.
A set schedule and plan for when and what you will study can be very impactful. The main factor that students have trouble with is not knowing what to do, and instead going for other hobbies or fun activities that may not be important at the time.
In the end, successful studying comes down to finding what works best for you and sticking with it. Whether that’s minimizing distractions, managing your time wisely, or maintaining a positive mindset, these strategies can make a real difference. With the right approach, even the most daunting study sessions can become more manageable and ultimately more rewarding.
