Today’s new generation at San Luis Obispo High School is slowly forgetting many important icons and historical figures such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X.
“I’m going to find a way to be slightly biased here… My grandparents happened to be at MLK’s “I Have a Dream speech” so I will designate that as the most impactful moment of the civil rights era,” said paraeducator Luke Senecal.
Many students at San Luis Obispo High School are not aware of the importance of these people.
“I believe strongly in the cause of civil rights and the importance of continuing to advocate for equality and acceptance for everyone. I think that is a struggle that will always be necessary,” said history teacher Robb Wilwand.
They’ve made many changes that are still relevant to this day, but many of these historical figures have sadly been assassinated.
“It’s extremely important because they pushed for free speech during a time when segregation was happening in our country. It showed light that not everyone had the freedom of speech or all things that the American dream offered,” said paraeducator Chase Harrison.
This shows how in today’s generation many younger people do not know the importance of these movements. Schools should teach more of important events and the reality of our country.
