Talented students walk through the halls of San Luis Obispo High School, amazing singers throughout the school. Many of these students are enrolled in the choir course.
“[The choir community is] pretty encouraging. As soon as I came in, everyone was really welcoming to me. And we were really encouraging each other and helping each other get better,” said junior Frida Vega.
In the choir class, students enhance their singing and performance skills, learning how to improve their singing and find their voice. The students have many concerts throughout the year to show off their hard work and display their vocal skills.
“I also enjoyed having an outlet every day to sing. If I had a bad class that I had before [choir], I could always let out some steam during choir. It made me really happy that I could like work on my voice, and for free. It’s free resources at the school,” said Vega.
Students in choir learn various songs, and certain students get to audition for the seasonal showcases.
“[For my audition song,] my friends helped me choose the song ‘I’d Rather be me’ from ‘Mean Girls.’ I wanted to pick an upbeat song, a song that will make the audience think ‘Wow, they’re having so much fun on stage.’ That song does just that,” said junior August Jonson.
Many students take both choir and theater courses, as choir helps students to hone in their acting and singing skills simultaneously.
“I was in theater at first and I realized after doing my first musical that I wanted to enhance my voice better and choir seemed like the sensible way to go,” said senior Jamie Collins.
Whether it be to learn to sing, or to find an encouraging community, the choir class at SLOHS is a fantastic option for students to take. Be sure to attend their upcoming concert on May 30, Tigers!
