Technology is very handy, but it has its downside in SLOHS student’s daily lives.

Technology is consuming people’s minds and overall harming students at San Luis Obispo High School. Technology is very handy, and it can help with a lot of troublesome thoughts we have, it’s making the world more blind but also more antisocial and less conversational.

“Yeah, technology has its upsides with how far we’ve come along. [But,] when you think about it, [technology] socially affects teens by making them less social,” said junior Jacob Resendiz.

Social media is a very dangerous aspect today, causing issues ranging from loss of work production to setting up catfishing in which minors get kidnapped and abused. Not only that, but students don’t even understand who they even are reaching out to or chatting with.

Polls have shown that parents understand the concerns. In a major 2020 poll, 72 percent of parents saw the biggest issue facing their own children to be overuse of social media/screen time. This was ahead of other issues such as bullying (62 percent) and even smoking or vaping (52 percent)

This is a major problem in our society and there has to be a solution. Why not turn it off?

“I think that the internet can be a dangerous place especially for young students; they are not properly educated,” said junior Diana Pruett.

At some point, technology has to find a solution to these problems that happen on a daily basis.

Right now on break from school is the time to cut back on social media use. Try a Social Media fast, where you leave the phone off for a whole day. Talk to your parents about regulating your use. Make a New Year’s resolution? Maybe, well, go outside and exercise instead.

Social media and technology itself is making us less social, and it is becoming more and more dangerous for minors and children that aren’t educated.

Try to turn it off, after finishing this article of course. Ok, now!
