This year’s Homecoming is rapidly approaching San Luis Obispo High School. The dance is set to October 1 and the anticipation nears its end as the weekend approaches. Homecoming’s master of ceremonies was interviewed by Expressions to get his standpoint on this school year’s first dance.

Expressions: How do you feel about being master of ceremonies?

AP calculus and geometry honors teacher Jimmie Johnson: It is a really nice feeling to be recognized by the students for my spirit and love of SLOHS.

Expressions: What are your duties as master of ceremonies?

Johnson: I will have a small role in the rally on Friday, but mostly my job is to introduce all 12 members of the Homecoming Court as well as announce the winners of the “Royal Four”.

Expressions: Have you been master of ceremonies before?

Johnson: I was MC back in 2017 which was a blast! That was the last year of the downtown parade that used to be part of the homecoming festivities.

Expressions: What were the homecoming festivities like before?

Johnson: What we used to do is on Friday, the rally would be at the end of the school day, and it would be an outdoor rally in the stadium. During the course of the week different clubs, different classes, like the sophomore class, would create floats and posters and stuff. So when the rally was finished at the end of the school day anybody that wanted to participate in the rally would then go out the stadium and like down marsh and up higuera. It kind of changed routes a little bit every year, but it was just like a fun thing for us to parade through town and be cheered on by anybody who was downtown and business owners and stuff like that. It was a really cool thing.

Expressions: Are you looking forward to this year’s homecoming?

Johnson: I am looking forward to the new stadium and scoreboard showing up close and personal video of all the amazing HOCO Court.

For those who show up to homecoming, have a good time tigers!
