San Luis Obispo High School Students listen to music on a daily basis. Whether it be their own or the speakers in the morning and lunch, SLOHS students come in contact with music at some point in their day. That music can improve students’ lives, or even just their day as music has several health benefits.

Listening to music can improve someone’s mood, and allow emotional expression. It boosts a person’s mood and raises their production of dopamine, which relieves the feelings of anxiety and depression. Along with elevating someone’s mood, music increases serotonin levels.

“With some songs, the artists go into more depth about certain emotions, and it helps knowing that they can describe emotions better than my brain can,” said sophomore Alexis Palmaymesa.

Listening to music has several positive benefits that correlate with a person’s mood. A certain genre can influence how a person feels, adding to any emotion that may be present. Music can stimulate memories and bring up happy times and calm an agitated mood.

Music manages pain, emotionally and internally. Research shows that music can cause blood to flow more easily. It can lower the heart rate, blood pressure, and decrease the stress hormone.

Most people listen to music while running, or doing many kinds of physical activities. Listening to music can improve morale and endurance. It also improves performance while doing other tasks that aren’t working out, such as school work.

Listening to music is not just an enjoyable thing, but a beneficial one. It’s nice to enjoy whatever song is playing and enjoy the improvement of one’s well-being!
