A Pinterest Summer of student DIY

A+Pinterest+Summer+of+student+DIY

At San Luis Obispo High School it is impossible to ignore the growing effects of social media, where trends zip through our daily lives and are constantly evolving.

While there are some definite negatives to social media, it is impossible to ignore the positives.

With apps such as Pinterest, WeHeartIt, and Instagram, it seems like fun do-it-yourself projects (DIY’s) are everywhere. Today, Expressions sets out to find student-approved DIY’s, which are perfect for the summer and easy for all:

DIY Exfoliating Sugar Scrub

“I’ve used sugar scrubs a couple times. My skin always feels super smooth afterwards and it helps clear things up. I recommend this sugar scrub  — I’ve seen similar ones on social media and this is a super basic one that you can’t get wrong,” said junior Kiley Gems.

Ingredients:

¼ cup coconut oil

1 cup granulated sugar

5-10 drops of an essential oil of your choosing

Steps:

  1. For 30 seconds melt coconut oil in a small microwave-safe container (heating up in a pot over stove is also acceptable);
  2. Pour sugar slowly into coconut oil and mix, adding more of either ingredient depending on the consistency of mixture (the texture should feel like wet sand);
  3. Add essential oil;
  4. Cool to a comfortable temperature;
  5. Apply a small amount to skin as a test patch; and
  6. Apply to the face, arms, or legs for smooth skin.

DIY Ice Cream

  “This recipe is pretty similar to what I did at camp, so it’s a really fun summer concoction that lets you eat ice cream, even when COVID-19 keeps you at home,” said senior Gracie Ward.

Ingredients:

1 cup heavy cream

1 ½  tablespoon granulated sugar

½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Pinch of salt

Steps:

  1. Pour all ingredients into a large mason jar;
  2. Shake jar firmly for 4-5 minutes or until it thickens;
  3. Freeze for 3 hours or until hardened; and
  4. Serve with toppings of your choosing!

DIY Hair Moisturizing Mask

  “This is a quick DIY to moisturize your hair and have something to do when you’re bored. This is perfect for summertime, as that’s when hair is normally at its driest,” said junior Madison Montoya.

Ingredients:

1 teaspoon avocado oil

½ teaspoon honey

1 teaspoon olive oil

1 egg

Steps:

  1. Whisk egg until the yolk and egg white are completely blended;
  2. Add avocado oil, raw honey, and olive oil to egg mixture;
  3. Put and leave in hair for 20 minutes; and
  4. Wash hair and see the shine!
