Good morning Sand Luis Obispo High School Community,
I hope everyone has been staying safe and busy! Since we are currently living in difficult and uncertain times, what better way to spread positivity than community service? Our Ag Leadership class and FFA Chapter has decided to come together to support dairy farmers, who have been struggling greatly during the past three months of the COVID-19 crisis, as well as members of our community who are in need of food and resources.
To provide a little bit of background about the project, I must give credit where credit is due: One of the incredible things about the FFA organization (an my favorite aspect) is the ability to make connections with students and teachers across the country. Throughout my FFA career, I have met hundreds of students from other states, and become especially close friends with a young man from the La Farge FFA chapter in Wisconsin. He and his chapter reached out to me through social media and officially “challenged” us to tackle this community service project. SLO FFA being the competitive chapter we are, we accepted the challenge and are now asking for your help!
We are looking for people (students, staff, or even other community members) to donate dairy products that we will then give to the Community Action Partnership of SLO (CAPSLO) which is an organization that has connections to families and individuals in need. If you would like to donate, we will be collecting products THIS FRIDAY, May 29th, up at the District Office from 9:00-10:00 am. All you have to do is drive up and drop off! Just to get an estimate of numbers, it would be awesome if you could email me at [email protected] to let me know what items you will be bringing, but if you are unable to do this it is perfectly fine to just show up on Friday and surprise us!
We opened this challenge to our students last week and received 13 gallons of milk, 4 tubs of yogurt, a 24 pack of yogurt, 7 pounds of butter, and multiple blocks of cheese. We loved all of the student involvement and willingness to help out, but now we would like to extend the challenge to staff members in hopes of collecting more! If you can’t make it this week, or want to donate twice, not only will we be collecting products this Friday, but the following Friday as well!
Thank you so much for everything you all are doing to help accommodate students during this time. We appreciate your efforts in making online learning navigable and effective. We hope to see you Friday!
Sincerely, Sophia Silacci and SLO FFA
