SLOHS Show Choir Performed “Nightmare Before Christmas” and it Turned out to be Far From a Nightmare

On October 22, San Luis Obispo High School’s first ever Show Choir performed a “Nightmare Before Christmas” medley at Laguna Middle School, and it ended up stealing the show. The choir spent many weeks leading up to the fall concert practicing and rehearsing, and it paid off. Show Choir closed the show, contrasting well to the Chamber and Concert Choirs with choreography and Broadway-like enthusiasm. It was a very good show, and you could tell how hard the choir worked on it, and the audience could see the close bond that the performers had with each other.

“Usually bonds like that are made more in like, big productions,”said Senior Shea Colborn, a Show Choir student who took on the role of Jack Skellington. “So I didn’t expect to be as connected to the group as I was that night. We had a whole singing warm up thing that we did, and it just really unique in the way that I felt connected to everybody. Everyone was so ready to go out there.”

For most Choir classes, a student has to request to be in it, but with Show Choir, it was made as a class where anyone got put in.

“We started the school year not exactly sure what the class was going to be,” said SLOHS Choir teacher Ms. Wallace, “But the second I heard them sing, I knew they would be immensely successful as a show choir. The class was eager to learn and though we originally prepared only four songs, we were able to perform eight for the concert back in October.”

Some people may say that Choir performances are boring, but this one was far from it. The SLOHS Show Choir performance was engaging and entertaining.

Many Show Choir students who are also involved with the Drama Club at SLOHS expressed their feelings of excitement about the concert. With ongoing construction, SLOHS students have been looking for different theatre outlets, and Show Choir was a great taste of more theatrical things that are soon to come to the high school.
