Why Are All Those Kids There? SLOHS Summer Sports Camp

It’s now summer, so why are small children running around Laguna Middle School? That is the San Luis Obispo High School sports camp. This year will be the sixth anniversary of the camp.

“The Summer Sports Camps are actually a lot of fun, the kids have a lot of energy and I really enjoy watching the high school students be mentors and lead a group of young, impressionable future Tigers,” said sports camp coach and SLOHS teacher Marci Beddall.

Children from ages four to thirteen can sign up for a range of camps. Groups are separated by age and there are ten weeks of camps. These camps average around one-hundred-fifty kids per week. The camps do cost money for the kids participating, but it is relatively cheap compared to other summer activities in the area. The money paid goes to SLOHS athletics and is a way of fundraising for SLOHS sports.

Each week focuses on different sports including football, volleyball, soccer, cheer and wrestling. The sports are all offered on different weeks throughout summer, and there are some ‘all sports’ camps that include multiple different sports. The camps are run by SLOHS coaches and Jeff Brandow the SLOHS athletic director.

“The most important thing is that it connects fifth through eighth graders with the high school, with our coaches with our student athletes and it’s just  an awesome thing,” Said SLOHS athletic director Jeff Brandow

SLOHS athletes volunteer with their sports team to teach younger kids the sport they play. The camp encourages healthy living, friendship and exercise with the youth.  The camp is a great for everyone to get involved in the community. “It takes a lot of work to organize but it’s a really positive thing,” said Brandow.

Athletes can get service hours for volunteering. Students who volunteer when they are freshman and continue on every summer, they can make a job out of it. In addition, they will get up to three or four hundred service hours by the time they are seniors. Seniors and  former SLOHS students who continue to volunteer can get paid and make it their summer job.
