The Netflix original “Bird Box” has received a lot of attention since it was released. There is even a challenge trending online called the “Bird Box Challenge”. Expressions wants to know why this movie has gained so much popularity, and how the accompanying challenge has affected individuals.

  The movie is about a woman and two children trying to reach a safe haven in a world where taking your blindfold off has the power to make you take your own life.

  “I first heard about the movie when I saw a couple videos on Instagram of people doing the ‘Bird Box Challenge’ and I wanted to understand what it was all about so I watched it and it was pretty good,” said junior Sophie Hammons.

  The “Bird Box Challenge” simulates the main struggle the characters experience in the movie where they cannot look at the sky so they have to remain blindfolded when they’re outside. This challenge has come with certain consequences, however, primarily individuals taking it to extremes. According to the Washington Post, a Utah teenager decided to blindfold herself while driving with another passenger and ended up colliding with another vehicle. Though no one was injured in this situation, it is reasonable to assume that if the challenge continues to this extent, serious injuries and even deaths could be in the forecast.

 Considering how open-ended the film is, it’s likely there’s a part two is in the works in which, hopefully,  they’ll dive deeper into the unexplained elements of the story.

  “I really hope there is a part two to this movie because I didn’t really understand the whole idea of why looking at the sky caused people to commit suicide,” said sophomore Isabella Nunes.
