Homework: Friend Or Foe?

Homework%3A+Friend+or+Foe%3F

Students at San Luis Obispo High School are often heard complaining about how much homework they have. Studies have shown homework can help get higher scores on tests. Students who have been assigned homework showed that they can excel in many different school subjects. Students who were assigned no homework were proved to know more about things outside of school. 77 percent find the link between homework and achievement to be a positive thing.

“Homework is very helpful, but it’s just a lot of work,” said freshman Reese Baughman. In an article from Penn State News, head of Penn State’s Education Policy Studies department Gerald LeTendre said, “Very simply, too much of anything can be harmful.”

Other studies have proven that too much homework can be harmful. Overburdened by homework, children may become disillusioned with school and lose motivation. Students in the grade levels kindergarten through second should not be assigned any homework. But, in high school the time that should be spent on homework is no more 30 minutes per academic course. So overall that leads to 90 minutes to 2.5 hours per day.
