On Saturday, March 25, San Luis Obispo High School’s Movimiento Estudiantil Xicano de Aztlan (MEXA) Club will be hosting their first Spring dance: “Baile de Primavera”. Along with the help of the Associated Student Body and Friday Night Live, the dance will be held at the new gym from 8:00 to 11:00 pm. Tickets can be purchased prior to the dance for five dollars, and at the dance for seven dollars. Students must bring their student ID to enter.
Expressions interviewed ASB’s Commissioner of Cultural Awareness, and MEXA club’s president, senior Andrea Hernandez about what students can expect.
Expressions: What do you have planned for the “Baile de Primavera”?
Senior Andrea Hernandez: We will have activities like corn hole, lotería (Mexican bingo), a photo booth, snacks, drawing, and dancing.
Expressions: How did you pick the theme of the dance?
Hernandez: The theme was originally going to be “Cinco de Mayo”. Our purpose was to bring something new to campus by having the Mexican theme and Latino music. But, because cinco de mayo is an event celebrated primarily in the United States, and is also an excuse for adults to go out and drink, the ASB invited Friday Night Live to join the cause of the baile to promote a healthy and fun celebration. Soon after, we realized that our date was too crowded with the annual spring dance, testing, and prom, so we moved it to March 25. The new theme is now “Baile de Primavera” which means “Spring Dance”.
Expressions: Why should students come to the dance?
Hernandez: First of all, to support our school, and to get involved. It’s the first time a dance with predominate Spanish music has been planned at SLOHS, at least the first time in my four years of high school, so why not try something new and be exposed to a different culture in the world of music and dancing.
