This summer, when the packed and dirty beaches of Avila make you wish it wasn’t summer, head over to the other, better, less crowded beaches of the central coast for your swimming and frolicking needs. After surfing every weekend for the past half a year, a few select beaches stand out as some of the better ones in this breakdown of the breaks.
- Morro Strand Beach: Average Wave Size: 5-7 feet (Best Bodyboarding)
Away from the surfer-dominated Morro Bay Beach, Morro Strand gives you a similar experience without the hassle of almost getting run over while trying to swim. The bigger waves are fun for body surfing, but way less fun for surfing because of the close shore breaks.
- Cayucos Beach: Average Wave Size: 4-6 feet (Best hangout)
Cayucos is a great place to start to learn to surf because the waves rarely get too big to try. More experienced surfers would not enjoy the flatter waves and choppy winds though. (The tide pools are a big plus as well!)
- Pismo Beach: Average Wave Size: 4-7 feet (Best Surfing)
Great for the more experienced surfers because of the wind and powerful waves. Recommended by many surfers for its waves and beach!
