San Luis Obispo High School Advanced Placement U.S. History teacher John Franklin is forced to say goodbye to his well-known room. Room 401 is decorated with many flags covering all the walls in his room and the ceiling too. Franklin has collected these flags from past; and to each student that has donated a flag to the collection, he has written a kind message. Along with the flags, “the soccer ball and the access to the private bathroom,” said junior Grace Park, will also be missed. Expressions talked to Franklin about his room.
Expressions: What are you going to miss most about the room you’ve created in the past couple years?
Advance Placement U.S. History Teacher Franklin: The color, and being neighbors with Mr. Lehmkuhl; we’ve had a great relationship.
Expressions: Do you have a favorite flag?
Franklin: I love them all.
Expressions: How did your collection of flags start?
Franklin: I had the British flag and the old glory, and since you can’t put anything on the walls because it’s so hard, I bought a couple more flags and it just started to snowball.
Expressions: Are you going to try to recreate the room you have now, for next year’s class?
Franklin: I can’t do that again, there’s just too much stuff. But I’ll put flags up for sure.
