Catching up With Deep Mistry

Catching+up+With+Deep+Mistry

This week, Expressions decided to catch up with one of San Luis Obispo High School’s most notable alumni, Deep Mistry. Known around campus for his thrilling Tiger News Network Sports announcements, iconic Senior Showcase performance, and extreme enthusiasm- Mistry’s graduation has left us all at a loss this year. Mistry is a freshman at University Of California, Berkeley. Nowadays you can find him studying in the library, chilling with friends, or raging on game day.

Expressions: How’s your first year at college going?

Deep Mistry: [Expletive] awesome. You have so much time and freedom. You get to choose how you live your life and you’re doing something new everyday. Partying on the weekend, studying during the week, going to the gym, hanging out with friends, it’s fun.

Expressions: Has college been anything like how you imagined it would be?

Mistry: I didn’t know what to expect going in, I just knew that I would have a lot of time on my hands. I just took it day by day and tried to find my routine. I was disappointed a little by the party scene, thinking there’d be ragers all the time but it’s not like that. But it’s the cutthroat competition at Berkeley that keeps you going.

Expressions: What were the best experiences that you had at San Luis Obispo High School?

Mistry: Now that I look back I really cherish the relationships I made in high school, especially friends and teachers. Associated Student Body and TNN will always hold a special place in my heart because of the people and work we did together. But the relationships I formed were the most important.

Expressions: What advice would you give someone on how to have a positive high school experience?

Mistry: I’d tell them to get involved, find something they like and get into it. Take it day by day, don’t have the mindset of wanting to graduate already or go to college already. Your high school experience is something you will always remember because of the relationships you form. Get to know the staff, the culture, and go to school everyday with a positive attitude ‘cos then that will become contagious throughout the school. High school can be tough, but it becomes a whole lot easier if you learn to love it.

Expressions: Your performance last year at senior showcase was what some might call “iconic” and continues to be referenced from time to time among SLOHS students. What is your reaction to this?

Mistry: To be honest, the reaction is surprising but means a lot. I always wanted to leave my signature or legacy at SLOHS. No better way to do that than through stirring it up, another reason why I’ll always be a tiger.
