Whether you’re doodling, designing t-shirt designs, or playing with different mediums, summer is the perfect time to let all your creativity out! Art courtesy of Molly Himelblau or @boiled_prince on Instagram.

Summer has just begun and San Luis Obispo High School students are enthusiastically looking for fun ideas to make the most out of their long break.

With over two months of relaxation and free time, SLOHS students should consider expanding their art horizons and skills.

“You’re really free from the stress of school and you have a lot of time to harness your creativity. You get to use new mediums you haven’t before and explore your creativity,” said junior Charlie Elston.

Art no longer has to be restrictive or limited. Browsing on Pinterest or taking any inspiration from real life or imagination will boost creativity and allow one to develop healthy outlets of expression.

“It’s nice to focus on art so intensely and do it more incrementally. Over the summer, I’m gonna work on ink illustrations and practice drawing buildings. The first year at [Milwaukee School of Design] will be a lot of fundamentals, so I want to do my own things as much as I can,” said 2024 SLOHS graduate Molly Himelblau.

Class of 2024 graduate Himelblau will be majoring in art and wants to take advantage of her free time to express her interests and do passion projects. Just like many others who will be doing art over the summer, their skills in art will inevitably increase all the while making what they want.

“You have way more creative freedom and there’s no limitations, like you could sign up for art classes. I’ll be practicing my drawing skills because my friend is making a webtoon right now and I will be the head writer and do some illustrations,” said 2024 SLOHS graduate Asia Higgins.

There are many ways to improve your art, whether it’s practicing it on your own or attending workshops like the classes Art Central in San Luis Obispo offer. These workshops are available throughout the months of June, July, and August.

Getting better at something, whether it’s art or something else, is always a process. But progress is not achieved by luck or accident alone, but consistent practice and effort.

Whether it’s one sketch a day or committing yourself into a big painting, summer is the perfect time to explore and deepen your creativity while building your artistic abilities.
