Last week, the students in San Luis Obispo High School’s Newspaper Production and Leadership class did a slow rollout of a new and improved website look for slohsexpressions.com (you are looking at it right now).

The changes grew out of general dislike of the previous site’s look, one time money from the SLOHS administration, and the hard work of sophomore editor Aidan Field and junior editor Sage LaMacchia Meeks.  The last full overhaul of the website was at its inception during October 2014.

“This is AWESOME, and I already put the link on Google Classroom for all classes,” said English teacher Laurie Decker.

Field and LaMacchia Meeks put in over twenty issues combined, and focused on throwing out old background colors and fixing general spacing issues.  They focused on adding new widgets, which are interface applications, including up to date scores for SLOHS team sports, revolving articles, Tiger News Network Links that work, and robust collection of past print issues that goes back to 2014.

The students were able to transfer all of the previous site’s content to the new site.  The site currently has 2292 articles published on it, not including this one.

“The new website better expresses what our campus is about, and it is really cool looking,” said LaMacchia Meeks.

What did adviser Scott Nairne do to help?

“Not much.  I secured some money and support from Principal Rollin Dickinson, which was easy. He is an absolute supporter of these students.  After doing some research, I found that 96 percent of whatever high school newspapers are left use one company. So we went with that company as the web host.  Besides that, I watched in awe as Sage and Aidan went to work,” said Nairne.

Feel free to email Nairne at [email protected] with story ideas or comments.  The website has a banner at the top that potential advertisers can click on to help fund the project.

The Expressions staff plans on publishing daily year round.
