Many famous athletes are known for their unusual rituals. National Basketball Association player Michael Jordan was known for the superstitious act of wearing his University of North Carolina shorts under his Chicago Bulls uniform for every game while leading the Bulls to the championships. These game day rituals are not only performed by professional athletes, but also by athletes here at San Luis Obispo High School.
“Before every game our team goes into the locker room, turns off all the lights, pounds on the walls and screams to get warmed up,” said Girls Varsity Soccer player Mara Basich-Pease.
Whether it’s playing the same song before every game or repeating the SLOHS Tiger chant, our teams can come up with some of the most bizarre pre-game routines.
The Cross Country team brings a coconut filled with the dirt from all of their past races. They continue to pick up dirt from every course and sprinkle the dirt onto every runner’s head before racing.
The Varsity Basketball team has multiple rituals they perform before, and during, their games but when asked to share them, they denied.
“…Yes, many of them [Boys Varsity Basketball players] have those, but as they are superstitions, it’s not good to talk about them for fear they will stop working,” said Boys Varsity Basketball Coach Laurie Decker.
SLOHS athletes have their very own unique game-time superstitions, in which they rely on in order to continue being extremely successful, whether they share them or not.
