People are elitist when they talk about music at San Luis Obispo High School. Some students join in, others listen to music that is deemed basic.

“I sometimes don’t like it when I want to listen to Taylor and people I know won’t want me to play it because it’s bad or basic,” said junior Leila Johnson.

In many cases being an elitist is an overall distaste for whole music genres just for it being popular. While liking music that not many people know, and is at times thought provoking. Also, it is while telling others in some way that their music is better.

“For whatever reason, they have defined themselves as people who know what music is,” said ASU musicology teacher Nilanjana Bhattacharjya. “And there are some people who are actually going to believe them.”

Some students are not full elitists, however they do like their music, especially when it comes to it being different from others.

“The music I listen to is different from most students, I don’t think it’s exactly better but I like that not everyone listens to it and it is good music,” said senior Joel Kubacki.

Overall there is a need for people to understand that music is just music. If it is popular or not it doesn’t make some music better over another person’s taste, but still, music is worth spreading.
