San Luis Obispo High School has a new trend. Teachers are texting their students. Most kids have some intimate relationship with at least one of their teachers but we have more teachers taking advantage of this.  Currently it is against San Luis Coastal Unified School District policy for teachers to have any social media or texting communication with students.

“It’s kind of sad because SLO High School’s rep, specifically, has just been going down a lot,” said senior Karl Karsh.

With Brandow’s alleged case last year and the new one from a different teacher currently under investigation this year, It’s safe to say that SLOHS staff is in shambles.

“The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for intentional infliction of emotional distress; sexual harassment; negligent hiring, supervision and retention of an unfit employee; negligent supervision of a minor; and negligence,” said KSBY reporter Katherine Worshsm about Brandow’s suit.

This example was not enough though. More teachers are continuing to text their students regardless of repercussions.

“It’s inappropriate to do. If you need to contact students, email them through their school emails,” said Karsh.

It’s not for a lack of easy communication methods. It’s been more prevalent this year than ever. It is not just morally wrong yet a hard rule set in place by the district to prevent such instances from coming up.

“The easy back-and-forth between teachers and students can create important bonds, especially for young people who are in need of extra help,” said Time reporter Randye Hoder.

While the rebuttal is understandable, students and teachers are perfectly capable of creating strong connections and getting that extra help by; staying after school, emailing, and raising your hand in class.

Teachers, it is unacceptable to text students.

Students, if you really care about your teacher do not text them back. Always report inappropriate student-teacher interactions and be safe.
