San Luis Obispo High School students have most likely seen the chick flick movie “(500) Days Of Summer”, released in 2009. This movie, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tom Hansen and Zooey Deschanel as Summer Finn, exhibits Tom and Summer as a couple over the course of 500 days.

Tom reflects on their relationship to find out where he went wrong, and in the process, discovers his true passions.

“Every detail is perfectly curated, from the tone’s relationship, to past and present scenes of the movie, to the body language of expressive characters,” said freshman Finley Pearse.

Director Marc Webb has delivered a movie that lives outside of what people expect from romance. He manages to avoid cliche and, instead, highlights the integrity of relationships when faced with fantasy. Through Tom, we see a man who is unsatisfied with his work and eager to discover a relationship that will complete him.

Tom meets Summer in his workplace, and with the hopes that she is the one he has waited for all this time, Tom develops an image of Summer that he falls in love with.

“This is a story of boy meets girl, but you should know up front, this is not a love story,” said the narrator, played by actor Richard McGonagle.

These changes are so simple that the message of the movie is often misunderstood. It can be difficult to see the meaning since the movie is told through Tom’s eyes, someone that creates delusions about his newfound love.

“This is a fantastic movie, even for people who wouldn’t normally watch rom coms. I would watch “(500) Days Of Summer” a thousand times over if I could,” said freshman Zoe Peters.

Some would say he’s an unreliable narrator because of this, but others may relate to him. Nobody enjoys recognizing hard truths or mistakes they’ve made. Seeing this in “(500) Days of Summer” is just another aspect of the movie that highlights the reality of some relationships.

“Sometimes people have identified this as, like, an anti-romantic comedy because of the way that the movie ends, but I’m not anti-romantic comedy,” said director of “(500) Days Of Summer” Marc Webb.

Rom com lovers will find this movie tickling their fancy. If students haven’t already seen it, “(500) Days Of Summer” is available for streaming on Hulu, and to rent on Amazon.
