This year San Luis Obispo High School is finally reinstating a freshman cheer team after not having one for a decade. The freshmen are so excited to be part of their class team and are working hard to keep the privilege of having this new team.

Cheer is not a joke.

“Cheer is hard when you’re learning the halftime dance and stunts. You need a lot of strength,” said cheerleader and freshman Yahaira Villasenor.

It requires a lot of stamina to keep pace with the rest of the cheer members and stay in sync. Although it is not a CIF sport, SLOHS cheer members still work hard to persuade students that cheerleading is a real deal and not just some club.

Once spring hits, stunt is the CIF sport that most cheerleaders compete in, which makes these girls year-round athletes!

“I think the freshman cheer team is not recognized because hardly anybody goes to the freshman football games. Varsity cheer gets the most recognition,” said Villasenor.

Freshman cheerleaders feel that their team is not recognized at all and want to change that to being recognized the same as varsity cheer.

“They work hard and get along really well,” said cheerleader and freshman Ava Connelly.

Go freshmen cheer!
