When joining the military there are many things to be considered, and San Luis Obispo High School can help prepare future soldiers for service.

All students who are looking to join the military have to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Test (ASVAB), which eight out of ten people fail on the first attempt. It is really important to get careful instruction before the test.

“SLOHS is part of the reason I joined. They offered the ASVAB my junior year, so that made it easier. Sports also helped me to get physically ready,” said 2021 graduate and U.S. Army Specialist Zackary Hill.

Some schools offer a Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) program which leads over sixty percent of graduating seniors to continue military service at higher levels. JROTC program helps highschool students experience the environment of military service before graduation.

These programs help prepare soldiers for the military because there are difficult, yet rewarding physical regimens to keep in shape.

“Three mornings a week we have [physical training], and Thursday afternoons we have a lab where we do different training exercises,” said Hill.

SLOHS sports can also prepare students to develop the physical and mental fitness to continue in the military.

“Wrestling taught me such good self-discipline, the physical fitness I gained helped me to transition to the military,” said 2023 graduate Aidan Maples.

The military is challenging to become involved in; from the multiple physical tests to the written tests like the ASVAB. Soldiers will earn a good work ethic and self-discipline, qualities that are admired in every aspect of life.

SLOHS does everything to see Tigers go into service, offering many opportunities.
