Unit tests. Finals. AP Tests. PSAT. SAT. Students at San Luis Obispo High School are seemingly always taking tests, and some aren’t always aware of good studying habits and techniques.

SLOHS has a wide range of honors and advanced placement (AP) courses offered to students, which trade a faster paced workflow and generally more challenging work for a grade point average boost (GPA).

Expressions interviewed AP and honors students to see the ways in which they study for tests.

SLOHS junior Wesley Bartlett is taking five AP classes: AP Biology, AP U.S. History, AP Spanish Language and Culture, AP Calculus AB and AP English Literature.

“I’ll go through my notes and just refresh what I actually know about the content. Then, if they provide practice problems, I love to do those because they give me a better idea of what will be on the actual test, especially for math classes,” said Bartlett.

Another student that Expressions interviewed was junior Amaya Jayakody. Jayakody is taking AP U.S. History, AP Calculus AB and AP English Literature.

“Normally, I feel pretty prepared [for tests] because I stress so much about them. I basically force myself to study. I like using Quizlet for history or Spanish classes and Khan Academy for math classes,” said Jayakody.

SLOHS senior Emma Jantos is also taking five AP classes: AP Biology, AP Statistics, AP World History, AP English Language and Composition, and AP Microeconomics.

“Mr. Rubio taught me to take practice tests when I can as a way of studying! That has really helped for all my classes because I figure out what topics I need more work on! I also am a visual learner so watching videos is helpful for me. It all depends on the person though. I often feel prepared as long as I study and pay attention in class,” said Jantos.

Although these students are enrolled in very challenging classes, these tips may be very helpful for students taking college preparatory classes, as well as those taking honors or advanced placement courses.

Tests are a large part of any high schoolers’ education, and so it is important to prepare accordingly for these tests.

When wondering how to study, or looking to get a bit more practice for finals, check out these tips from other SLOHS students. Good luck, Tigers!
