San Luis Obispo HIgh School’s math department has recently welcomed new algebra I and II teacher Luke Mayberry to its numbers.

Because of this, Expressions took the time to have an interview with Mayberry and learn some things about him.

Expressions: When and why did you start teaching?

Mayberry: After college graduation I worked as a data scientist for a few years and then decided to pursue a career in teaching as I had always thought I’d enjoy it. I had also been teaching dance in the area for awhile and had fun doing that, so I thought I would try to teach math too. I have been teaching for three years.

Expressions: Why do you think it is important for students to take algebra?

Mayberry: Algebra helps us build the tools to understand the world from a mathematical perspective. I used many of the skills started there as a data scientist to help answer questions that had a huge impact on the associations I was working for. Graphs and data are everywhere and being able to understand them are essential for not being misled. A good portion of Algebra is constructing graphs and saying what they mean.

Expressions: What made you decide to apply at SLOHS?

Mayberry: I heard great things about the student, staff, and school environment.

Expressions: Where did you teach beforehand?

Mayberry: I did some teaching at Daniel E. Lewis Middle School.

Expressions: What are some of your hobbies or favorite pastimes outside of school?

Mayberry: I like to hike, run, workout, read, and dance. I have been teaching dance for a while now and know more than ten dance styles.

Expressions welcomes Mayberry back his second year at SLOHS!
