At many schools across America, sports uniforms are a controversial topic, but here at San Luis Obispo High School students are generally happy with the sports uniforms. SLOHS has many different sports teams of all genders. The uniforms are updated regularly and are generally accepted by our students.
While SLOHS is doing well, there are different tweaks which need to be made for different sports for certain people to feel truly comfortable.
“I wouldn’t say [the uniforms are] uncomfortable, but it definitely doesn’t make some girls comfortable because they feel like they look like middle schoolers and not high schoolers,” said softball player and senior Tea Fischer.
For years sports outfits have been an issue, particularly for girls, skimpy and form-fitting uniforms have been known to negatively affect self-esteem and body image. Some believe that sport uniforms, such as those with a more form-fitting dress code, over-sexualise students from a young age.
“Qualitative research suggests that feeling self-conscious in sport uniforms may be one reason why adolescent girls drop out of sport[s],” said researchers Amy Slater and Marika Tiggemann in their Uncool to do Sport study.
SLOHS has come a long way, the school uniforms for most if not all sports have little to no complaints. However, there is always room for improvement.
“The uniforms are not sufficient for everyone. I feel like the uniforms need more sizes especially for the girls team,” said track team member and sophomore Taylor Borgsmiller.
Sports are a very important part of a high school’s environment and making sure students feel comfortable in their uniforms and PE clothes is essential to helping students thrive. All in all, while there will always be room for improvement, SLOHS is doing well with combating this particular issue.
So what do you think about the uniforms, Tigers?
