With Governor of California Gavin Newsom’s most recent goal for California schools, grade levels K-12, to return to in-person learning by April 1, 2021, San Luis Obispo High School looks forward to their potential return in this month of March.
As hoped for by around fifty percent of the student population and families, it looks as though SLOHS will return by Monday, March 15, 2021 only if the SLO county is in the red tier.
“According to our most recent School Board vote, secondary schools (SLOHS, Morro Bay HS, Pacific Beach HS, Laguna MS, and Los Osos MS) can return once our county has been in the red tier for five days. This will be no sooner than March 15th, but could be after the 15th if we are not in the red tier five days prior,” said SLOHS Vice Principal Jessica Miller.
San Luis Obispo is currently in the red tier, as of March 3, 2021 at 1:00p.m.
But even though we are currently in the red tier, what exactly needs to happen to stay here?
“For counties in the red tier – where there are fewer than seven new cases daily per 100,000 residents and test positivity is below 8%,” said news source “The Sacramento Bee.”
So, it seems as though SLOHS is on the right track to be returning to school, but needs to reach March 15th, 2021 while remaining in the red tier, which is only about a week away.
SLOHS students that have opted for in person instruction will be back in classrooms on a hybrid morning model, and Distance learning will continue in the afternoon.
However, if SLO country were to abruptly re-enter the purple tier, SLOHS would not return so soon.
“If we are not eligible to return on the 15th [of March], we will push the start date back until we are,” said Miller.
