Many San Luis Obispo High School students are intrigued in the world of politics, especially given the historic year we have endured, and even if you’re not, assuming that you haven’t been living under a rock, you know that we have a new president-elect.
On January 20, president-elect Joe Biden will be sworn in as the President of the United States alongside vice-presidential elect Kamala Harris.
Expressions decided to find out what an inauguration ceremony looks like during COVID-19 and how SLOHS students feel about our incoming administration leading our country during a truly challenging time for all of us.
“Having president-elect Joe Biden in charge of handling the riots at the capitol would make the country safer because he would be taking control of the situation, unlike what Trump is doing right now. There’s no way Biden has ever or would ever advocate for rioting at the capitol and putting innocent lives in danger,” said senior Isabella Hoffmann.
With the recent horrifying occurrence of Trump supporters breaching the capitol building and causing chaos and terror, many SLOHS students are even more eager to have a new president leading the country.
“With the election, I am happy that Biden won. I don’t believe the recount was necessary. I don’t really understand why they raided the Michigan state building, there was no reason at all. I will most likely be watching the inauguration of Joe Biden,” said freshman Gabriel Limon.
The events on inauguration day will include an inaugural address to display his plans of handling COVID-19 and greater economic issues the country faces. In previous inauguration ceremonies, there was a large crowd, but due to COVID-19, there is an extremely limited attendance with only 1,000 tickets available.
“A new president will most likely do the trick because we will finally have someone taking action to these events including COVID-19, global warming, and immigrant discrimination,” said freshman Leonardo Eulate.
While still claiming and preaching to his supporters that the election was fraudulent, Donald Trump has stated that he will not attend the inauguration, despite the custom tradition that the former president attends and passes a peaceful transfer of power. Some of his supporters are reportedly planning a virtual “second inauguration” for Trump at the same time Biden is sworn in.
“I’m scared for my future. I’m also scared about what this country has become. All I can do now is pray,” said freshman Alyssa Moore.
The inauguration will be streamed on every major news site, television, and other streaming devices. Beginning at noon EST and pre-event festivities at 9:30 a.m. EST. Bi-den!
