Senior soccer star Kelby Jecker recently broke his foot playing soccer for San Luis Obispo. Even though his foot was broken he continued to play goalie. He was dedicated to his role as goalie and was unwilling to let his team down. Expressions got a chance to interview him.
Expressions: How long have you been playing soccer?
Senior Kelby Jecker: All my life. Well since I was six, so eleven years.
Expressions: How did you break your foot?
Jecker: In a Paso game a ball was coming down the center of the block, and I called my defender off. I went and collected it and one of the forwards from the Paso team kind of stomped on my foot when he ran past.
Expressions: Why did you still keep playing?
Jecker: At that game I was the only game keeper that wasn’t injured or sick, and that’s part of playing the game, playing through the injury.
Expressions: Why is soccer the most important thing to you?
Jecker: Because it’s what I’ve done since I was six years old, and I love doing it.
Expressions: Why do you love doing it?
Jecker: Because its running around and diving on the ground, and it’s a contact sport and there’s nothing more fun than being outside and kind of getting to run free.
Expressions: What was the last game of your season like?
Jecker: It ended really crappy like and we were all crying.
Expressions: How do you think the team played?
Jecker: The team did really well, we fell asleep and that’s why they scored the first goal, their only goal. Then we just kind of got unlucky.
Expressions: What was the end score?
Jecker: We were one to one at the end and went into overtime, which is a sudden death, golden goal. Then no one scored during that, so we went into PK’s [penalty kicks] and they scored.
Expressions: What was the best game, in your opinion?
Jecker: The Paso game, because I got to play the whole game.
