The Physical Education (PE) program here at the San Luis Obispo High School is a good way to stay somewhat active and an alternative to playing sports, but what happens when your class can’t be as lively as other class periods?
Currently, the fifth period PE classes are unable to use any other facility on campus other than the cycle room, weight room, and sometimes the small gym due to the usual spaces being utilized by school sports teams.
“It’s a matter of trying to balance facility usage and time. When you have sports teams that practice during fifth period, it usually puts pressure on the availability of spaces. We are doing our best we can to work with the athletic programs so we can share facilities when possible,” said PE and yoga cycling teacher Mike Lee.
Every day, students are forced to entertain themselves by either using the bikes, lifting weights, playing with basketballs in the big gym, or watching Netflix on the flat screen TVs in the cycle room.
“It’s really annoying and repetitive because we do the same thing every day. We don’t have as many choices as the other classes since all the sports teams are using everything. I hope we can find a way for the fifth period PE class to become an actual class and do real activities,” said freshman Marina Rosnau.
As fifth period PE classes continue, hopefully, they will be able to create other spaces for students to get their heart rate up or find a way to better use their time by allowing students to work on projects for other classes.
