Last Thursday, San Luis Obispo High School’s girls golf team celebrated winning league finals at Chalk Mountain Golf Course in Atascadero. Expressions chatted with senior and team member Emily Lemiere on the big win, the preparation that went into it, and what it takes to be a great golfer.
Expressions: How did you feel when you won league?
Senior Emily Lemiere: I had like so many mixed emotions, I didn’t even know what to think. We wanted to win so bad, so actually winning especially after losing one of our best scores that day was pretty amazing.
Expressions: What preparation went into making sure the team was ready for the finals?
Lemiere: We did the same thing we did all season. We got to the course, went to the putting green for a little, then went to the range, and then we went and chipped. Our coach Brian had us work on our chipping the most because that’s where we were struggling throughout the season.
Expressions: What do you think is an important skill or mentality to have if somebody wants to play golf?
Lemiere: You have to be very patient and determined. It’s a very hard game to play, and if you’re struggling, it’s pretty easy to give up rather than keep practicing to get better.
Expressions: What is it about golf that you love?
Lemiere: Well, I am a super competitive person, and golf really gets really competitive with scores and stuff, so I really like that part of it. Also, all of the girls on the team are super fun and I’ve made some great friends through golf.
Expressions: What would you like San Luis Obispo students to know about the golf team?
Lemiere: We sometimes spend practice choreographing dances.
