Ceramics, the ancient art of molding clay into a desirable shape, has been around for millenia, and here at San Luis Obispo High School we are lucky the class is offered as an elective.
This class includes handbuilding, wheel throwing, and sculpting, combining the art of creation with the 3D aspect of the class. It also fosters an amazing art community.
So, why take the class, even if those art forms do not appeal to you?
Is there any hidden benefit to this hands-on elective?
“The people in [ceramics] are all super nice and it’s a really chill environment, especially if you get Mrs. Houle, she’s a really great teacher and I love her class,” said senior Hunter Temple.
The art community thrives around supporting others and fostering the shared love of creativity.
“They [also] dont grade you too harshly, I’ve made some really bad projects in that class, and I still passed the class,” said Temple.
Students claim the stress level in the class is quite low. Even if it is not your favorite class, passing it should be no problem.
The community the class fosters is an extremely positive one, with people encouraging students with every project. Students can make some of their best friends in ceramics, and that is a major positive.
“It works with students that are taking a lot of advanced classes because it could be a more mellow and stress relieving class,” said ceramics teacher Tawnee Houle.
Houle has been teaching the SLOHS ceramics class for nine years. She has created a wonderful environment for learning and creativity.
“I also see a lot of improvement in their personal confidence in what they can do, so like there is a lot of negative self-talk at first, and then they start to get proud and bring their friends in at lunch to see what they are making,” said Houle.
So, is ceramics really worth it?
According to students that have been in the class, it is absolutely worth it. The blend of creativity and ease of the class allow students to do their utmost best while enjoying it at the same time. Who knows, you might make some lifelong friends and experiences as well.
