What happened to the San Luis Obispo High School surf club?
Every Friday the SLOHS surf club used to meet at lunch in English teacher Brian Moss’s room, 121. Occasionally, the surf club would get together outside of school to surf or just hangout, but this year, it all fell apart.
“When I was surf club advisor ’til 2005 we actually could take district vehicles and go surfing. Surf club today plans trips outside of class, but I think they just watch surf videos in the classroom. It was a school sponsored field trip in which we could take boards and wetsuits and go to Rincon or Ventura and go surfing for the day,” said former surf club advisor Scott Nairne.
The surf club is not what it used to be, but Nairne thinks that it could bounce back.
“The surf club can start to advertise that they can actually surf for the Morro Bay surf team. I think that’s one thing they can do a better job of because I feel like there are a lot of good surfers at this school that don’t know that,” said Nairne.
Former surf club members like Kai Monge are brainstorming future plans to bring back the old surf club.
“We want to start going out as a group at least once a month,” said Monge.
To all the SLOHS surfers, as of now the surf club is not very active but students could get together to make it what it used to be. Surfing during school hours, trips sponsored by school, and watching videos during lunch, doesn’t that all sound fun! Go out and support the SLOHS surf club.
