This Saturday, November 16, the Arroyo Grande Clark Center is hosting a film expo put on by the Central Coast Film Society for any students, including those at San Luis Obispo High School, who are interested in learning new skills from experienced filmmakers.
“[It’s] a day long event where professional filmmakers from around the area put on free workshops for students interested in making their own films,” said digital media teacher Zach Roper.
The expo will have workshops which will teach students how to operate new equipment in order to improve their filmmaking skills. Some workshops are focused on specific skills like camera operating, scene blocking, editing, lighting, or even make-up and costuming. These workshops help students understand how little details change the quality of film.
“The workshops are super cool [because] you get to use real filmmaking equipment and see how professionals go through their creative process,” said Roper.
The event will also allow students to connect with professionals in the film industry, broadening their connections and creating future opportunities.
“[The best part will] definitely be the networking opportunities, because in the film world, it’s all about who you know and opportunities that you can get or have gotten before,” said senior Meredith Whitcher.
Aside from the workshops, there will be a film masterclass at the beginning of the expo (ten a.m.) and there will be four film showcases throughout the day, featuring short films from students all throughout the central coast. These screenings are a great chance for students to be recognized for their work, while also finding ways to improve based on their peer’s work.
“It’s a really great opportunity for students to learn about filmmaking, network with professionals and have fun with other film students from around our area. The Central Coast Film Society is a really great organization that does a lot to help out our film program and other schools on the Central Coast,” said Roper.
This event has free registration, so if students are interested they should visit centralcoastfilmsociety.org to sign up. All other information can be found on the same website, and the film expo is from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday.
Any students interested in film should check out this expo on Saturday, it’ll be a great time!
