Students at San Luis Obispo High School may or may not know what the 27 Club is.
What is this mysterious club that most would hope to never join?
One would think 27 is just a typical number, but there’s a backstory to it. Back in the day, many young artists such as American musician Kurt Cobain, American singer Jim Morrison, American guitarist Jimi Hendrix, and British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse mysteriously died at just the flourish age of 27.
The term 27 club became widely known after Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994, with rock fans connecting his age to that of Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Brian Jones, and Jimi Hendrix.
Some people say that some of the members sold their souls to the devil, some say that they got poisoned, and some say they died due to mysterious causes.
One theory is about American musician Robert Johnson. Some people believe he sold his soul to the devil. In the story, it is told that he met the devil at a crossroad and he gave him his soul in exchange for being good at the guitar.
“Johnson became one of the most famous guitarists to ever live! I think that’s pretty cool, and honestly if I could be that good at the guitar, I’d sell my soul too,” said junior Karl Karsh.
The 27 Club is something important to musicians in particular. To remember the 27 Club is to remember something historical that changed the world.
